WHAT TO SEE IN SAN SEBASTIÁN’S CITY CENTER

1. LA CONCHA BEACH & SEAFRONT PROMENADE

When you picture San Sebastián, this image likely comes to mind: a perfect bay with golden sand, calm waters, and a white railing straight out of a postcard. And yes, La Concha Beach lives up to the hype. But did you know that the iconic railing was designed to keep horses from falling into the sea? Strolling along the promenade, you’ll discover carved stone benches, ancient lampposts, and touches that serve as reminders of aristocratic summers spent here.

Walking this stretch feels like strolling through history. And if you look up, you’ll see how the splendor of the Belle Époque still lives on in the seafront facades: historic hotels, French-inspired villas, and wrought-iron balconies whispering stories of the past —all framed by the silhouette of Santa Clara Island on the horizon and the mountains that drape the city like a backdrop.

2. SANTA CLARA ISLAND

Situated at the center of the bay, Santa Clara Island looks like a floating postcard. But it’s not just scenery: there’s a lighthouse, a terrace bar –open June to September–, picnic spaces, and even a small beach that emerges at low tide. You can reach it by boat from the harbor, kayak, or if you’re feeling adventurous, by swimming. Did you know? The island’s lighthouse first lit in 1864, and in recent years it’s been illuminated at night as part of an artistic light installation. If you want to visit the island by boat, you can buy tickets at the ticket window by the harbor entrance:

3. CITY HALL & ALDERDI EDER GARDENS

Facing La Concha Beach stands one of San Sebastián’s most iconic buildings: the City Hall. Opened in 1887 as a casino, it was for decades a gathering place for European high society drawn by the city’s elegance and mild climate. At its feet are the Alderdi Eder Gardens, which, translated from Basque, means “beautiful place”. And the name couldn’t be more fitting! This colorful spot, filled with tamarisks and flower beds, is perfect for a restful pause. Plus, the Parisian-style carousel overlooking the bay is a whimsical treat for both children and adults.

4. VICTORIA EUGENIA THEATER

On the other side of the Kursaal Bridge along the Urumea River stands the majestic Victoria Eugenia Theater. Inaugurated in 1912 in Neo-Plateresque style, this theater has long been the cultural heart of San Sebastián.

Did you know? It’s one of the main venues for the San Sebastián International Film Festival. Stars like Meryl Streep, Brad Pitt, Penélope Cruz, Susan Sarandon, Denzel Washington, and Al Pacino have walked its red carpet. This year’s festival runs from September 19TH to 27th. If you’d like to attend a premiere, tickets are available on the festival’s official website.

5. A COFFEE AT PLAZA GIPUZKOA

Just steps from the theater, you’ll find a plaza that feels straight out of a fairy tale: Plaza Gipuzkoa. This little urban oasis features a duck and swan pond, centuries-old trees, and charming corners. Look out for its working meteorological pavilion —one of the few left in Europe— and the flower clock, whose blossoms change with the seasons. It’s the perfect spot to pause and enjoy a coffee at one of the surrounding terraces.

6. SAN MARTIN MARKET

Want to eat like a local? Step into San Martin Market, one of the city’s most authentic places. Opened in 1884, it’s been modernized yet still retains the soul of a traditional marketplace. It’s where Michelin-starred chefs shop… and for good reason. You’ll find everything: fruit, vegetables, flowers, cheese, fresh pasta—and even Joseba Arguiñano’s bakery, run by the son of the famed Spanish chef Carlos Arguiñano.

> Tip: If you’re planning a seaside picnic, this is the perfect place to stock up.

7. THE CATHEDRAL

Just a two-minute stroll from the market brings you to one of the city’s iconic landmarks: the Cathedral of the Good Shepherd, built in 1897 from sandstone quarried in Mount Igeldo. It’s the tallest building in San Sebastián —see it from across the river and you’ll understand why it’s likened to Notre Dame in appearance. Did you know? Its organ is one of the largest in Europe, with over 9.000 pipes. At night, the plaza and cathedral lighting create a magical ambiance.

Right across from the cathedral is Casa Otaegui, a pastry shop founded in 1886, once the official supplier to the Royal Household. We recommend trying the panchineta —Queen María Cristina’s favorite!— and their unbeatable chocolate palmier.

8. SHOPPING ON AVENIDA DE LA LIBERTAD

If you’re in the mood for shopping or window-shopping, Avenida de la Libertad is your destination. Since the city walls came down in 1864, it’s been San Sebastián’s grand boulevard, lined with boutiques, cafes, and stately façades reminiscent of Haussmann’s Paris. On one side is the historic Old Town, dense with pintxo bars; on the other, the modern shopping district. It’s a perfect blend of history and contemporary life.

9. LA PERLA SPA

To end on a relaxed note like a true aristocrat, head to La Perla Spa. Overlooking La Concha Bay, this thalassotherapy center was a favorite of Queen María Cristina, who visited every summer for mineral-rich baths. Today, it’s a modern spa with stunning sea views and an atmosphere designed for complete relaxation. As a FeelFree guest, you can enjoy exclusive discounts —see the EXCLUSIVE DEALS section of your guide.
